>> Kathie Kushto-Reese: Today we will be learning about medical asepsis. We will be learning dry, sterile dressing change procedure. Wipe. Wash hands. Introduce yourself to patient. Identify patient. And explain the procedure. Drape the patient as necessary for privacy. Use trash receptacle with red bag. Cut necessary strips of tape and place them on the edge of the table. Open sterile container and pour solution into container making certain to lip the bottle before doing so. Peel open cotton tip applicator package at wooden stick end. Touch only that end and place into solution. Don clean gloves. Pull tape off of dressing by pulling towards wound. Remove one layer at a time. Assess the wound and dressing for amount, color, odor, drainage, and other signs of infection. Discard dressing in red bag. Change gloves if visibly soiled. Using one applicator at a time, clean incision with downward strokes. Turn the applicator while pulling down. Use all surfaces of applicator once. Change applicator after all surfaces are used. Clean incision middle first then each side, each time with new applicator. Set up sterile field and glove packet. Remove old gloves. Drop four by fours and ABD on sterile field. Gauze and ABD pads should not touch the one-inch border of the sterile field. Don sterile gloves. Place four by four over incision. Cover the entire dressing with an ABD pad, blue stripe side upward. Remove gloves. Tape dressing across top, middle, and bottom or around the perimeter. Date and time the dressing. Wash hands and document.
