[ Silence ] >> Wipe. [ Background Sounds ] Gather equipment. Position the patient with knees flexed and legs drawn up. Elevate the bed to a comfortable height. Using sterile technique, open the catheterization tray. Open away first. Side to side. Keeping a 1 inch border and then towards you. Lift out drape and place under patient touching only inch border. Don clean gloves. Open castile towelette and clean perineum. Clean anterior to posterior. Discard clean gloves and use hand sanitizer provided to clean hands. Using sterile technique, don sterile gloves. Remove fenestrated drape and place over perineum being careful not to contaminate gloves. Lift sterile tray and place next to box being careful to stay within the sterile field and 1 inch border. Open betadine and pour over cotton balls or use swabs. Attach 10 cc syringe to balloon port. Inject 5 ccs of fluid to test the balloon. Allow the fluid to return to the syringe and then leave the syringe attached to the port. In practice, you may or may not test the balloon. Lubricate the end of the catheter leaving in sterile field. Bring catheter kits, betadine or swabs to sterile drape under patient. With non-dominant hand, spread labia, keeping non-dominant hand in place through the remainder of the procedure. Cleanse midline of the meatus, anterior to posterior in a single stroke. Discard swab. Do not discard onto sterile field. Repeat with a fresh swab on each side of the midline meatus. Keep labia open with non-dominant hand. Remove catheter from sterile field with dominant hand. Insert catheter into meatus. When urine begins to flow pass the catheter another 2 to 3 inches. Hold the catheter in place at meatus with non-dominant hand. Inflate the balloon with dominant hand by depressing the syringe plunger and hold the plunger in place while disconnecting from catheter port. Give a slight, gentle tug to assure the Foley is in place. Hang the drainage bag on the frame not bed rail of bed. Discard materials. Discard gloves. Reposition patient. Wash hands and document.
