[ Silence ] >> Today we are going to learn the skill of basic IV administration. Check physician orders. Gather equipment. Wipe. Remove plastic from IV bag. Check the solution for cloudiness, particulate matter, and expiration date. Remove tubing from bag. Lock the roller clamp on tubing set. Remove plug from IV bag. Remove cap from spike of administration set while keeping spike sterile. Insert spike into bag using a thrusting twisting motion. Invert bag. Hang bag on IV pole. Squeeze the drip chamber until halfway full. See the line for marking. Open the clamp and prime tubing. Be sure to purge all air out of line. You can recap the end of the administration set if previously removed but it is not necessary to remove it. Don non-sterile or clean gloves. Remove old IV tubing if present. If not present, flush the tubing or heparin lock, medlock or saline lock after cleaning the port with alcohol. Attach new IV tubing. And insert the new tubing into clave. Open the flow clamp and regulate or count drips in the dripped chamber. The faculty will demonstrate how to time tape the IV bag. Label the tubing to indicate date and time change and sign with your initials. Remove gloves. Wash hands and document.
