[ Silence ] >> Shari Lynn: Hi, welcome to foundations of nursing practice and this is Shari Lynn. And I am here with Kathie Reese. And we're going to demonstrate for you the insulin pen. >> Kathie Reese: Wipe. Remove the flex pen cap and wipe the rubber stopper with an alcohol swab. Remove the protective tab from a Novofine needle and screw it onto the flex pen. Remove both the outer cap and the needle cap. Dial the dose to 2 units. Hold the flex pen with the needle pointing up and tap the reservoir gently. With the needle still pointing up press the button until a drop of insulin appears. This is called an air shot. If no drop appears, repeat the air shot. Now be sure the dose selector has returned to 0. Dial the number of units you are to inject. When dialing, be careful not to push on the button. Pinch the skin at the injection site. Clean the skin. Remember the injection site is the subcutaneous site at the back of the arm. Push the needle into the skin fold. Press the button down as far as it will go. While pressing the button, keep the needle in the fold for at least 10 seconds. This will make sure you get the full dose of insulin injected. Keep the button fully depressed until you withdraw it from the skin. Remove the needle without capping -- recapping. Put the needle in a puncture resistant container. Replace the cap on the flex pen for storage. Wash hands and document.
