Instructions for Faculty, Staff and Students

Note if you are a student who is also JH staff, you should probably follow the steps for "Faculty & Staff" where applicable. Unless you were a student first prior to becoming staff. In which case, the "Student" settings will probably apply to you.  If you try one and it doesn't work, then try the other.  If you still have difficulty with the following instructions, please contact the SON Help Desk

Steps for Apple iOS Devices:

These instructions were created with iOS 9. If you have an different iOS, the steps may vary slightly, but the information you need to enter should be the same.

  1. Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account.
  2. Tap Microsoft Exchange.
  3. Enter your full e-mail address
  4. (For Faculty & Staff ONLY) Enter JHED-ID@jhu.edu
  5. (For Students ONLY) Enter JHED-ID@jhaddress JHEDID@jh.edu (note the that this should be jh.edu not jhu.edu)
  6. Enter your JHED-ID JHEDID password
  7. Enter a Description for the account and tap Next
  8. The phone should automatically detect server settings and configure everything needed to access your mailbox.  If it does, proceed to step 9.
  9. If the server settings are not automatically detected, use the following settings to configure your device:
    1. For Faculty & Staff ONLY
                  Server: mobile.johnshopkins.edu
                  Domain: WIN
                  Username: JHED-ID
                  Password: Enter your JHED passwordFor Students ONLY
                  Server: outlook.office365.com
    2.             Domain: leave blank
    3.             Username: JHED-ID@jhJHEDID@jh.edu (note the that this should be jh.edu not jhu.edu)           
    4. Password: Enter your JHED password
  10. Tap Next on the upper-right corner of the screen.
  11. Choose the type of information you want to synchronize between your account and your device, and then tap Save. By default, Mail, Contacts, and Calendar information are synchronized.

Steps for Android Devices:

  1. (For Faculty & Staff ONLY) Enter JHED-ID@jhu.edu
  2. (For Students ONLY) Enter JHED-ID@jh.edu (note the that this should be jh.edu not jhu.edu)

  1. Domain\Username   Enter “WIN\” followed by your JHED-ID (Example: WIN\BJones1)
  2. If Domain and Username are separate text boxes in your version of Android, enter WIN in the Domain box and your JHED-ID in the Username box.
  3. Password   Use your JHED-ID password if this field is not already populated.
  4. Exchange Server   Enter mobile.johnshopkins.edu

Steps for Android Devices:

Microsoft now only recommends using the Outlook app for accessing Office365 accounts on an Android device.  See the link above for the app details.

When specifying your email address for the Office365 account, use JHEDID@jh

  1. IMPORTANT – Be sure to uncheck “Sync Text messages” if it is checked. Otherwise, all of your text messages will be sent to your JHU mailbox
  2. Email checking frequency   The default value is Automatic (push).
  3. Amount to synchronize   This is the amount of mail you want to keep on your mobile phone.
  4. Sync contacts from this account   If you select this option, your contacts will be synchronized between your phone and your account.
