Statistics show that personal paper use is one of the major factors driving today's environmentally damaging and extreme paper waste. The average daily web user prints 28 pages daily. 115 billion sheets of paper are used annually for personal computers.
To reduce the amount of paper waste, control increasing costs, and provide better printing options to our students, on May 24, 2013, the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing implemented a printing and photocopying control system. We implemented this solution with Centric Business Systems, the same company that provides the printing solution used in the Bloomberg School of Public Health (SPH).

Print Quotas and Costs

All other schools within Johns Hopkins University also implement controls on student copying and printing. Most do not provide free printing, and the costs range from $.04 to $.10 per page. We have chosen to match the quotas and costs currently offered by the SPH. All SON students (BS, MSN, DNP, PhD) will be given a quota of 1000 free black and white prints or photo copies each academic year (June 1st to May 31st), and any prints or copies beyond 1000 will be billed to the student's ISIS billing account at $.04 per page.

JHUSON Student Printing/Copying Costs

Free Prints or Copies

1000 per academic year (no carryover)

Cost per page (single-sided)

$.04

Based on a review of past student printing, we do not expect that most students will exceed their quota. The SON will continue to bear most of the cost of student printing and copying. We anticipate that implementing these limits will reduce wasteful printing and will help control costs.

Wireless Printing

The system that Centric has installed for us will allows students to print from their laptop computers (Mac or Windows). Printing wirelessly requires installation of Pharos client software.

Recycling

We also encourage everyone to continue recycling efforts. Special containers for paper products are located throughout the building. If you have to print, recycle the pages once you have finished using them.
